The Daily Run: Local runners shine at indoor meets

Olympic Trials bound and London hopeful Donnie Cowart kicked off 2012 with a nice little season rust-buster mile at a big invitational indoor meet at the Armory in New York City over the weekend. Our local RMR speedster dusted off his spikes, last used for his sweet performance for the U.S.A. in the steeple at the Pan Am Games back in October, and rocketed to an impressive early season 4:02 clock stopper at this prestigious indoor event.

Albemarle’s Adam Visokay, also burned up the indoor turns over the weekend, as he clocked an equally impressive 4:24 at the Woodberry Forest meet. Visokay’s stellar time has him currently in a familiar spot: at the top of yet another Central Virginia list, this time in the mile. Western’s Dave Taylor had his own special indoor performance at the same meet as he blasted to a superb 2:35 in the 1000. There are some years when that blazing time will earn you a blue ribbon at the actual State meet!

A huge “congratulations” needs to be shouted out to Albemarle native Ian Rogol, who was recently tabbed as The 2011 Virginia Collegiate Athletic Trainer of the Year. Wow, is that one helluva an honor and as a longtime friend and fan of this deeply committed and passionate trainer, I can honestly say that this award is truly and richly deserved to Ian! Since high school, Rogol has taken a keen interest in helping athletes to safely get back on their feet. Having worked with legends like Joe Gieck, Ethan Saliba and Bob Wilder, he gained valuable experience that ultimately led to his first college gig at Mary Washington University, where, in just two short years, Rogol has created new protocols and has worked tirelessly to help their athletes.

And on a personal note, many times over the years, this fine young man, who, as the son of a sub 3 hour marathoner Dad, has always had a soft spot for runners, has, on a volunteer basis, come in on a Saturday morning before hours, to share his knowledge and experience in teaching our staff some of the basics of athletic injuries. Thanks for all you do, Ian…we’re mighty proud of you!

A trio of locals drove away with a pile of hardware from The Richmond Frostbite 15K (9.3 miles) over the weekend. Jennifer Hochrein scored an overall blue ribbon in the Masters division with a sub 7 minute/mile performance and Hosni Haghigian took second in the Masters. George Rich broke 65 minutes and was one of the tops in the 50-59 division, too.
