Comcast plans to fully transition to all-digital programming, a move that will provide more high definition channels and better Internet speeds but could cost some customers more in monthly TV equipment fees.
Spokeswoman Alisha Martin said the move, dubbed “World of More,” will allow Comcast to add 50 new HD channels over the next few months, increase online speeds and position it for future service enhancements.
Customers who already have digital equipment installed on their TVs won’t need to take action. Martin said those who do not will need to obtain either a set top box or digital converter kit in order to maintain their TV service following the first phase of changes, which are slated to occur on or around March 6.
Customers will receive a limited number of in-home digital equipment upgrades at no charge based on their current service plan.
“Expanded basic” cable customers will receive one set-top box and two digital adapters for no additional monthly cost; “limited basic” customers will receive up to three digital adapters, and existing digital cable customers can receive up to two digital adapters for secondary televisions that don’t currently use set-top boxes from Comcast.
Standard, expanded basic and existing digital customers will pay $9.95 per month for each additional set top box and $1.99 per month for extra digital adapters. Limited basic customers will pay an additional 50 cents per month for extra digital adapters.
The remaining expanded basic channels will shift to digital on or around March 27, and the limited basic channels will go digital on or around April 17.
Customers can obtain the new equipment in person at a Comcast service center or order it online or by phone. More information is available at comcast.com/digitalnow or by calling 1-877-634-4434.
