» The Albemarle County Medical Society met Feb. 9 at the Boar’s Head Inn. The society held a business meeting followed by a lecture by Dr. Gerald Donowitz, a University of Virginia professor of internal medicine and infectious diseases. Donowitz lectured on “community acquired pneumonia — principles of care 2012.”

 

» Diffusion Pharmaceuticals LLC has announced it will begin clinical trials of the drug trans sodium crocetinate. The drug will be considered as a first-line treatment for newly diagnosed primary brain cancer, also known as glioblastoma. There is currently no cure and patients diagnosed as having the disease have an average life expectancy of 18 months after diagnosis. The clinical trial’s lead site will be the University of Virginia and the process will be supervised by Dr. James Larner, chairman and professor of radiology oncology.
