l Northrop Grumman Corp.’s Sperry Marine business unit in Charlottesville was awarded a contract to provide technical support services for the integrated platform management systems installed in the United Kingdom Royal Navy’s new Type 45 destroyers. Under the new support contract, Sperry Marine will establish a test and technical support facility at its U.K. engineering center in New Malden.

l The employees of State Farm Insurance Operations Center in Charlottesville collected more than 5,900 pounds of food during a 10-day food drive. The food, equivalent to 4,600 meals, was donated to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank for distribution to the area’s hungry.

 

l Kyanite Mining Corp. of Buckingham is the winner of the 2009 Virginia Mineral Mining Reclamation Award presented by the Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy and the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance. KMC employs approximately 150 people in North America’s only kyanite mine. The award recognizes the company’s environmental efforts.
