UVa holds reception for two exhibitions

To celebrate the start of the academic year, the University of Virginia Art Museum will have its Final Friday reception from 5:30 to 7:30 this evening.

Exhibitions on display include “Gabriel Laderman: Unconventional Realist” and “Mutual Attraction: Photographs from the Collection of the University of Virginia Art Museum.”

Refreshments are provided.

There is a $3 admission to Final Friday receptions. It is free to UVa students and museum members.

The exhibitions also can be seen from noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays, free of charge.

Parking is reserved in the A6 parking lot at the end of Madison Bowl, across from the museum. Additional parking is available in the Culbreth Road Garage.

Kluge-Ruhe toasts ‘Best’ and the ‘Son’

The Kluge-Ruhe Collection will hold an opening reception for its new exhibitions this evening from 5:30 to 7:30.

The local gallery will feature two new exhibitions. “All Time Favorites: Best Loved Works from the Kluge-Ruhe Collection” will be on display along with “Gelam Nguzu Kazi” or “Dugong My Son.”

“All Time Favorites” will include paintings on bark and canvas, sculpture and objects representing styles and techniques used by Aboriginal artists from different regions of Australia. This exhibition will run through the rest of the year, but pieces will rotate periodically.

Gelam,” an exhibition of limited edition linocut prints by artists from the Torres Strait Islands, will be on display through Oct. 12. Part of a U.S. tour, the exhibit includes prints by Dennis Nona, winner of the Telstra National Aboriginal Art Award in 2007 and 2008, as well as Billy Missi, David Bosun and Victor Motlop.

Fluvanna is seeking art for ninth show

The Fluvanna Heritage Trail Foundation is looking for entries in its ninth annual art show in the Pleasant Grove House during Old Farm Day.

Works completed within the last three years are eligible, including three- and two-dimensional works.

Joan Soderlund will serve as juror for the show. A graduate St. Mary’s of Notre Dame, Soderlund is a resident artist and teacher at the McGuffey Art Center. She has received numerous awards and her works are in private and business collections.

The deadline to submit art is Sept. 25.

The annual festival will be Oct. 4, with a rain date of Oct. 5. After Old Farm Day, the art will be displayed at the Fluvanna County Community Center in Fork Union for the rest of October.

Cash prizes will be awarded.

Entry forms will be available at Maggie’s House in Palmyra, Fluvanna County Library, the Community Center in Fork Union and McGuffey Art Center.

‘Gallery’ is new view on art and history

A new book by a Keezletown resident combines art and history by featuring his portraits of all U.S. presidents.

“The Presidential Gallery’’ by Charles R. Vogan Jr. includes short, succinct biographies of each president, and each is accompanied by a pencil drawing of the president, reproduced from Vogan’s original 18- by 24-inch pencil drawings.

Vogan has added an interactive feature by leaving a blank page. When the next U.S. president is elected, readers will be able to download Vogan’s portrait of him from his Web site, and place it on the blank page.
