New ‘Landscape’ unfolds at Ruffin
“Landscape,” a new multimedia exhibition, will open Tuesday in the University of Virginia’s Ruffin Gallery.
The show, organized by independent curator Emily Schroeder, will remain on view through Feb. 20. A reception is planned for 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30 in the gallery.
Schroeder is founder of the Normal Projects, a Chicago gallery specializing in exhibits of works on paper and video by emerging artists. Schroeder gathered the work of 12 contemporary artists whose practices range from experimental video and animation to sculpture and drawing.
Martha Jefferson goes to collage
Loes van Riel drew her inspiration from Rembrandt for her new show that opens Monday at the Martha Jefferson Hospital Outpatient Care Center.
“Rembrandt in Amsterdam,” a collection of mixed media collages, will remain on view in the second floor gallery through March 9.
Van Riel was born and raised in Amsterdam, just a few minutes’ walk from what is now known as “the Rembrandt House.” The beauty of these 17th-century documents, handwritten by notaries and lawyers inspired the local artist to make this series of collages using paper, 23-karat gold leaf, screening, pearls and copper.
