Barn Swallow is among the ‘Best’

Barn Swallow has won the 2008 Best of Charlottesville Award in the Craft Galleries and Dealers category by the U.S. Local Business Association.

The USLBA Best of Local Business Award Program recognizes outstanding local businesses throughout the country. Each year, the USLBA identifies companies that it believes has achieved exceptional marketing success in their local community and business category. These are local companies that enhance the positive image of small business through service to their customers and community.

Various sources of information were gathered and analyzed to choose the winners in each category. Winners are determined based on the information gathered both internally by the USLBA and data provided by third parties.

UVa makes way for Artisans’ Bazaar

The annual Artisans’ Bazaar at the University of Virginia will be from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom.

The bazaar will feature a wide variety of crafts such as jewelry, pottery, ornaments, salsas, handbags and photography by select UVa and regional artisans. There will also be interactive projects and a raffle.

Artists, crafters and wine in Crozet

Savor a little art while enjoying complimentary wine tasting and hot soup at Three Notch’d Grill in Crozet during the Holiday Bazaar from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday.

The restaurant will be open to kick off the holiday season with a house full of artists and crafters offering their wares while Robert Crum, of Roanoke Valley Wine Company, will host a tasting of affordable, American, “green” wines.

The bazaar will feature local artists with a variety of unique goods for sale. Included are handmade note cards, evergreen wreaths, beaded jewelry with pearls and semiprecious stones, herbal products, gourmet foods, unique handbags and sewn items, pottery and more.

The restaurant is at 5790 Three Notch’d Road, across from the Crozet Library.

Group show opens Tuesday at center

McGuffey Art Center will hold its annual Holiday Group Show from Tuesday through Dec. 28.

The Group Show in all the galleries of the art center, featuring more than 50 artists with a wide array of artwork and gifts. Painting, drawing, printmaking, fiber art, clay, stained glass, hot glass, sculpture, and photography will be represented.

Kluge-Ruhe changes holiday hours

The Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection will be closed Thursday and Nov. 28 for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Normal hours will resume on Nov. 29.

Gordonsville gallery hosts its sale

Galerie LaParliere is holding a holiday sale starting Saturday.

The sale of decorative painting and murals will continue through Nov. 29 and resume Dec. 5-6. Art works will be reduced from 20 to 50 percent.

Maryvonne LaParliere, who specializes in original paintings and hand-painted furniture, has her own gallery in Gordonsville at 109 S. Faulconcer St., one block behind Main Street.

The hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bargmann earns art fellowship grant

The national artists’ advocacy organization United States Artists announced the recipients of 50, $50,000 USA Fellowship grants for artistic excellence. Among them was an artist from Charlottesville, landscape architect Julie Bargmann.

Bargmann was named a USA Fellow for 2008 and was honored at a celebration at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago.

Bargmann, who is known building regenerative landscapes on derelict sites, is the founding principal of D.I.R.T. — Design Investigations Reclaiming Terrain or Dump It Right There. Since 1992 D.I.R.T. has worked with Ford River Rough Plant, U.S. Steel South Works, Hudson Yards, the High Line. She received a Cooper-Hewitt National Design Award in 2001.

USA Fellows include artists in the fields of architecture and design, crafts and traditional arts, dance, literature, media arts, music, theater arts and visual arts. This is the third year of the USA Fellows programs, bringing the total funds awarded directly to working artists to $7.5 million.

Bargmann was the only recipient from Virginia.
