A 21-year-old Lovingston woman was listed in critical condition at the University of Virginia Medical Center Thursday night after a morning accident on U.S. 29.

Around 6:20 a.m. Thursday, Heather Lynn Collins was driving her 2006 Toyota Camry in the northbound lane of U.S. 29 near Faber Road. Police said it appears her car drove off the left side of the road and hit trees in the median.

Sgt. Peter J. Mainzer Jr. said police are unsure what caused the crash. The department’s accident reconstruction team doesn’t believe another vehicle was involved, or that Collins’ car had a mechanical failure. The road was dry at the time of the accident and there was no road construction work being done in the area.

Mainzer said police believe Collins was headed to work in Charlottesville at the time of the accident.

Anyone with information about the accident is asked to call Officer Robert McCormick at 296-5807.
