The Dismal quarter?

There’s a move afoot in east Virginia to get the governor to lobby for the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge as Virginia’s representative on a new set of quarters honoring national parks in each state.

The program would be like the highly popular 50 State Quarters series, which ran through last year.

That series was a great way to get children interested in the geography and history of America’s 50 states.

The Dismal Swamp is a unique, significant and fascinating site. But will it interest the public?

The Dismal is remote and hard to reach, and receives few visitors. It is not a park that invites.

Our own Shenandoah National Park is, however, one of the most visited parks in the federal system.

Perhaps the Dismal’s very mysteriousness will interest coin collectors.

With all due respect, however, we’re just not sure — from a PR standpoint — that it’s the best choice to represent Virginia.
