Burned out on UVa hoops?

Two years of being a crowd favorite during garbage time may be all that Andy Burns can stomach.
On Wednesday, the Virginia walk-on told The Daily Progress that he is considering quitting the team so that he can save his remaining years of eligibility to use after he graduates from UVa.
Burns, an excellent student, said his plan would be to go to medical school - perhaps in the Ivy League - where he would have a chance to play.
“I’m just taking some time off,” Burns said. “I’m not sure what I’m going to do.
“I just haven’t had that moment yet where I think I can give it up.”
Burns had scholarship offers from American and Vermont coming out of Bishop Ireton High School in Alexandria, but decided to walk on at Virginia instead.
“I’m glad I went here because of the school,” said Burns, 20. “I’m not upset at all by that decision. It was a good experience not playing. It sounds stupid, but playing with those guys at a high level in practice was a good experience.
“But I feel like I’m just going to get the same experience for two more years. I’m not going to get anything new out of it.”
In his first two years at UVa, Burns hasn’t played any meaningful minutes. As a freshman, he appeared in 13 games. This past season, as a sophomore, he got into only eight games.
With his floppy red hair, Burns became a huge crowd favorite. Fans at John Paul Jones Arena erupted on the rare occasions that he played.
Given Virginia’s overall lack of intensity this season, it was a little bit surprising that Burns wasn’t ever given a chance. The 6-foot-8, 212-pounder doesn’t possess ACC athleticism but boasts a pretty nice jump shot.
“I thought I could have played for this team,” Burns said. “In practice, I competed every day. I didn’t really get a shot, which was kind of a bummer, but I think I can play [in Division I].”
Burns has talked to Virginia coach Dave Leitao about his situation.
“He can’t promise anything,” Burns said. “He said I was a valued member of the team and as a coach he didn’t want to see me leave, but as a person he wants me to do what’s best for me.”
Burns, who didn’t take part in the team’s grueling off-season workouts, hopes to make his mind up soon. But, truth be told, he didn’t sound like a guy eager to come back and ride the pine.
With Jamil Tucker, Will Harris and Mike Scott ahead of him on the depth chart - plus incoming freshmen John Brandenburg and Assane Sene in the fold - there doesn’t seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel for Burns.
“I’m glad I played two years,” he said. “I wouldn’t have rather played two years at Vermont or American or whatever. I’m glad I played two years here, but like I said, I don’t see anything new coming, so I don’t know if I’m going to stick with it.”

Andy is a crowd favorite for a reason.  He is a great player and fun to watch.    We would stay until the very end of every game, in hopes the coach would put him in, and we would get to see the “big dog” play.  It’s obvious, Andy plays basketball because he loves the game, and he plays for UVA because he loves our school. I think he should have been given a lot more playing time, and don’t blame him for saving his eligibility for med school. It is a shame Coach Leitao didn’t appreciate all the excitement that Andy brought to UVA hoops. Can’t wait to see what school “Dr Burns” decides to play for next?  Good Luck Andy!!!

American at least made the NCAA and he would have had play time at the big dance.  If I were him i would leave Leitao’s team too.
