More to Lalich saga than meets the eye
Todd Lalich is a much better man than myself.
In case you haven’t had the pleasure of meeting Todd Lalich, you’re missing out. He’s the last guy in the state of Virginia that would want to be in the news this week, but his hand has been forced.
He’s the father of Virginia quarterback Peter Lalich, who has been the center of controversy for the past couple of weeks in what seems like a never-ending saga. Pete hit the news for the wrong reasons on July 13 when he was given a summons for possession or purchase of alcohol while being underage.
The situation became further complicated last week when this newspaper learned that the sophomore quarterback was charged with failure to obey a court order while on probation. Since then, Pete Lalich has denied rumors and accusations that he may have used marijuana or drugs while on probation and apparently urine tests supported his statement.
Things got worse Wednesday night when the University of Virginia announced that Pete Lalich would not accompany the Cavaliers football team to Connecticut for this weekend’s game against the favored Huskies.
The timing of this decision stinks, not only for UVa’s football team, but for Lalich and his family.
After coach Al Groh defended Lalich throughout this process, we would be led to believe by the University of Virginia that it was Groh’s decision to suspend Lalich or leave him home for the game. In fact, we have copies of
e-mails from disgruntled fans from UVa administrators that say as much.
But that’s not the truth.
During a conversation with Todd Lalich late Wednesday night, he confirmed what he was told about the decision concerning his son.
“I was told that [the decision] came from on high,” Todd Lalich said. “Al has been covering Peter’s back.”
Hmmm.
Last time I checked, “on high” didn’t cover Groh’s job description.
Anyone who has ever been around football would clearly know that no head coach would ever give his expected starting quarterback (in this case, Lalich) all of the snaps in practice on Wednesday, then announce afterward that he would bench Lalich and instead start a kid (backup Marc Verica), who has not played in a real football game since he was a high school senior in 2005, save a series against Southern California.
Such a move would be unthinkable by a coach. It would be breaking every cardinal rule of football coaching.
This decision was clearly made by someone who doesn’t have a clue about football.
But here’s the best part and this is why Todd Lalich is a better man than I.
If this had been my kid, being jerked around like this, especially a kid who was recruited by practically every football powerhouse in the country, I would have pulled him out of UVa yesterday and he would be re-visiting some of those suitors over the next month.
When Todd Lalich called this columnist and said he had a statement that he wanted published, I was intrigued as to what he might say.
I have known Todd Lalich since traveling up to Springfield to spend a day doing the Pete Lalich story prior to the bluechipper’s senior season. I already knew what kind of guy Todd was, a solid, straight-shooter with a proud athletic heritage that goes back to the 1930s when his father, Pete Lalich, was the recipient of pro basketball’s first “no-look” over-the-shoulder passes from Press Maravich (yes, Pistol Pete’s father).
More importantly, Todd Lalich is a man of extremely strong faith, but a humble man who loves his family.
When Todd Lalich’s statement started out like this, then paused, I guessed at what would follow:
“The Lalich family would like to tell any family out there that if they have a son being recruited by the University of Virginia or by Al Groh ....”
Lalich paused and I anticipated the quarterback’s father would say that those families should look elsewhere and that he was pulling Pete out of UVa.
I was wrong.
Should have known better having gotten to know Todd Lalich over the past two years.
Instead, this is what Lalich said:
“The Lalich family would like to tell any family out there that if they have a son being recruited by the University of Virginia or by Al Groh ... they shouldn’t even consider looking at any other school,” Todd Lalich said.
“Going anywhere else would be a mistake, because Al Groh is concerned more about his players than anything else ... After all this [saga] is over, Al and Peter will have a lifelong relationship. I trust Peter’s judgment and Peter trusts Al.”
Todd Lalich didn’t stop there. While we’re not at liberty to reveal the entire conversation at Todd Lalich’s request, there’s a lot more to this story that has not been made public.
“I would tell any parents out there that has a football recruit that Virginia is interested in, that if they want their boy to turn into a man, they should send them to Al Groh,” Todd Lalich said. “Fans might not like [Groh’s] X’s and O’s, or the way he deals with the media sometimes, but I am incredibly impressed with the way Al handles his players.”
For Todd Lalich and the Lalich family to stand by Al Groh like this speaks volumes about this entire situation.
The shameful part of this is that Virginia is making a trip to UConn today with
No. 7 being left behind.
This just isn’t right.

Free Peter? Dang, you guys are sick! I can remember when a young talented guy from stab was at uva playing football, he got caught with a beer being under age, and he got kicked off the team his first year and that was 7 years ago!! So tell me, what makes Peter any diferent about that guy? NOTHING! Peter has a grate arm yea but ummm the last time I can remember him, Peter was runing from Richmond defenders and trying to make something out of nothing, and o by the way, the play ended up being an interception! So, I dont respect these guys who go out there and brake the law because your out there puting your name out in public and everyone is watching you! Its up to them to do the right things because there will be people out there to throw you of track! I think that Peter should have been gone a long time ago. He was noted on file that he ammitted to smoking illegal products and drinking beer to a police officer so how in the world are you going to beat that? O wait, maybe he will because if the boy who got off scott clean for stabing Walker Sisk, then I know for sure the university will get Peter off to!!! I BET ANYONE ON THAT! O one last thing, I am a uva fan but I really hope uconn sock it to them because this football program really sucks. I have been to all home games since 1992 and this is the worst ever by far!!!!!!!!!!!
There is more to this story than meets the eye, but it really doesn’t have anything to do with Peter’s father. This is a tough thing for this kid to go through, albeit a self inflicted situation for Pete. I believe that the real story isn’t that he admitted then denied usind marajuana while on probation, but that the coaching staff and administrators have known for a long time that he has struggled with the drug.
My sources tell me that before this whole public mess and scrutiny started head coach Groh and the rest of the coaching staff knew about Lalich’s drug of choice, because, of several (atleast 3 or more) independent team positive drug tests for the illicit substance.
If they knew and have covered up this fact with, quotes like, “In this particular case it seems like in some circumstances a rush to pile on.” from coach Groh; then there has been a clear and present case of deliberate deception of the media by atleast the head coach al Groh, Jim Daves, Virginia’s assistant director of athletics for media relations (because they’re not just allegations if everyone on the inside knows it to be true), and everyone else who knew about the tests.
For an instition that prides itself on it’s strict enforcement of an honor code to have coaches and officials connected with the team involved with a public cover-up of an internal problem they’ve known about for quite a while would be shocking and grounds for dismissal, just like students who violate the rules.
Because everything starts from the top, and flows downward. How can we expect a kid like Pete to abide by the rules when it is apparent that in the case of being a UVa football player the coaching staff is willing to break them for them.
I would hope to hear these questions asked of coach Groh soon because you can’t blame a kid when you say don’t do this, but when he does you say, ok what I meant we’ll let it slide this time since you are our best chance at winning.
If this is true then the kid is the one taking it on the chin for the University and the coaching staff that continue to hide behind their blocking quarterback.
My question is does the Daily Progress have the journalistic integrity to go after the real story here, not just some tribute to further a disguise what is really happening in the locker room?
My problem w/ this incident is that I see no DUI,No failed drug tests& no Prior History. Is it possible that this young 20 yr was just buying a six pack to take back to his pad to watch a moview/ pizza?Don’t know but it certainly seems possible. It seems that the whole incident could have been handled much more rationally w/ a phone call to Petes family&his;Coach rather than involving the criminal justice system in a fishbowl enviornment that is C-Ville.Then again that’s just common sense thinking something we see very little of these days in America.Regards,B
Why should Peter be treated different than
anyone else who broken the rules. His father is not making it a big deal because
he knows his son is wrong. He broke the law (twice), others have been let go for far less.Once again there is double standards depending on who you are. I have
been a UVA fan for 20 years. I want to see our football team win but not at the price of honor. Why would you take your child out of school ,he was in the wrong not the school.Life is not about getting what you want by putting other people at risk.
I absolutely can’t believe that you can be put on probation&lose;your drivers liscense simply for purchasing some BEER as a 20 yr old.Wow!These must be the same folks who tried to cancel The Foxfield Races years ago.Thank God the Derby is in Louisville,Ky.Its no wonder that Mark Richt turned down the Virginia job years ago to take a similiar position at Georgia.Al Groh has the best resume in college football w/ several former assistants head coaches at other NCAA institutions.Virginia was very lucky to get him as people were not really beating the door down to get the job.As long as NCAA institutions fire coaches& their staffs for losing(often instigated by no nothing sports writers)there will be problems related to the pressures to win at ALL Costs.Sounds like America doesn’t it!Regards,B
The game against the Conn Huskies will be a real test for the Cavaliers. If they are as united as I believe they are, they will beat the Huskies. I sincerely think the TEAM will win by supporting both Lalich and Verica. Go Cav’s and show your pride tomorrow night.
Who are we kidding? This is another Al Groh moment of hypocrisy somehow being disguised as noble defense of his his mistreated player. C’mon folks…how many kids have been run out of the program for not meeting “team standards”? Defending Lalich, playing Lalich, not suspending lalich himself is utterly hypocritical. The only folks “on-high” who are not doing what they are supposed to are wearing cross sabre jerseys. The administrative folks, who have made numerous bone-head decisions recently, got this one right if, they did in fact, intervene.
For those in the media who lament the loss of Lalich for the UCONN game, look in the mirror. Coach Groh is such a good match for UVA because he not only is committed to a winning program and to his players, but he also shares the administration’s concern about the reputation and well being of the University. He is mature enough to deal with “what is,“ not “what should be.“ Right or wrong, the media’s constant focus on this story was hurting the public’s perception of the University. Groh and the administration are intelligent enough to know that his is important.
Free Peter Lalich!!! We’re behind you Pete. I just hope the team makes it through this week with a win, because fans have enough to blame Jocular John for already…
