It was a tough day for both the Virginia men’s and women’s tennis programs at Friday’s ITA Indoor National Championships at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.

On the men’s side, UVa’s Sanam Singh lost a three-set heartbreaker to Bryan Koniecko, the No. 8 seed in the tournament from Ohio State.

Singh, teaming with Houston Barrick, lost in doubles to Robert Farah and Steve Johnson of USC, 8-5.

On the women’s side, Jennifer Stevens — who looked great in a dominating win on Thursday — lost to sixth-seeded Fani Chifchieva of Auburn, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Virginia, however, had some success in the consolation bracket of the event.

Dom Inglot, who lost on Thursday, defeated Matt Hogan of Arkansas, 6-4, 6-3, while Michael Shabaz squeaked a win over Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, 6-7, 6-4, 7-6.

In doubles, Inglot and Shabaz atoned for their loss on Thursday with an 8-4 win over Andrew Landwerlen and Martin Zimmermann of Denver.

In the women’s consolation, Virginia’s Amanda Rales and Maggie Yahner lost to Gabriela Nicolescu and Maria Sanchez of USC, 8-3.

Play resumes today at Boar’s Head, beginning at 10 a.m.
