Covenant headed to Division II final
In Goochland, Emily Klein and Amy Inouye scored second-half goals to lift the Covenant girls soccer team into the VIS Division II final with a 2-0 semifinal victory over Wakefield.
Nikki Holzman had two assists for the Eagles (19-1-1), who face the Eastern Mennonite-Atlantic Shores Christian winner in the final at 11 a.m. today at St. Catherine’s. Covenant’s stout defense did not allow a shot on goal.
“The defense is impenetrable,” said Covenant assistant coach Kelly Rogers. “Emily Klein is our sweeper and she really leads the defense. They are the backbone of the team.”
Softball: William Monroe 2, Louisa County 0
In Stanardsville, Taylor Collier had an RBI and pitched a one-hit shutout as the Greene Dragons beat the Lions in the first round of the Jefferson District tournament.
Collier faced one batter more than the minimum 21. Monroe’s Bethany Leake had a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
The Dragons (10-11) will visit top-seeded Orange County in the semifinals on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
Baseball: W. Albemarle 16, Charlottesville 6
Sam Riedesel had a double, a triple and three RBI as the Warriors advanced to the Jefferson District semifinals with a victory over the Black Knights.
Western’s Peter Hurley went 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI. J.D. Ballard had a three-run home run and Jack Nobles had three RBI for Charlottesville.
“We got a lot of our hits in timely moments in the game,” said Western assistant coach Jim Freeland.
Western (13-6) faces Fluvanna County in the semifinals at Louisa County on Tuesday.
Hampton Christian 8, Miller 0
In Petersburg, the Mavericks’ fourth straight run to the state tournament ended one game short of the VIS Division II final as the Warriors’ K.C. Judkins tossed a four-hit shutout on Thursday.
Judkins also drove in three runs at the plate and Jake Cave added a home run and a double for Hampton Christian (26-2). The Warriors will face the Steward-Greenbrier Christian winner in today’s final at the Petersburg Sports Complex.
Brooks Palmerton had a triple for Miller, which won the VIC for the second straight year.
“I’m real pleased with our season,” said Miller coach Sam Beale. “We won the conference again. To get there four years in a row is pretty special. We had a good year.”
