PREP NOTES: Flucos go down fighting
Published: May 22, 2008
Western Albemarle and Fluvanna County’s boys soccer teams battled Tuesday night in a match that did justice to the fact that each team’s season was on the line.
It took nearly 100 minutes, with Western’s Alex Nolet notching a goal in the 99th minute during the fourth overtime period to give the Warriors the win — but not before the Flucos put together a Herculean effort in defeat.
Fluvanna’s defense, led by Chad Dynski, did a tremendous job of keeping Western’s offense at bay throughout, halting critical runs by the Warriors throughout the second half and the first three overtimes. In fact, Western didn’t manage a goal in normal game play until Nolet’s tally. Both the Warriors’ goals came on penalty kicks by Aaron Myers.
Offensively, Fluvanna was just as brilliant, with first team All-Jefferson District midfielder Zach Reilly sparking the Flucos in the second half. Reilly made run after run against the Warriors’ defense, and was one of only a few players who never really seemed to tire down the stretch.
Reilly made a number of hustle plays to give Fluvanna offensive opportunities and his goal with just under 17 minutes to play in regulation knotted the game at 2-2.
Unfortunately for Fluvanna, the Flucos’ season ends with the loss, but a big chunk of the roster, including junior goalie Casey Cagle, will return next season, surely with revenge on their mind.
“A lot of those boys will learn from this and bring it back next year,” said Fluvanna head coach Patrick Dieter. “It’s too bad we had to end like this.”
Justus named WFS head basketball coach
Woodberry has found a new head coach for its boys basketball program.
Joel Justus, an assistant basketball coach at Elon University for the past four years, has been named an assistant director of admissions and head varsity basketball coach at Woodberry.
“We are delighted to welcome Joel, who is recognized as a talented player and collegiate coach, to Woodberry Forest,” said Dennis Campbell, Woodberry’s headmaster, in a release. “We think he will contribute a great deal to the Woodberry experience.”
Justus is a 2004 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, where he was a four-year letterman on teams that won two Colonial Athletic Association championships and appeared in two NCAA tournaments and one NIT.
Happy 21st
Fork Union’s track team captured its 21st consecutive VISAA outdoor title this past Saturday at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond.
The Blue Devils got strong performances in the field events to take the crown, topping runner-up St. Christopher’s.
Austin Ofoma won the long jump (22’3”) and Kevin Domingue took top honors in the high jump (6’4”) to help lead FUMA. Ofoma also placed second in the triple jump.
Other notable performances included Jeremy Haney’s second-place finish in the 1600 meters (4:26.56), Matt Anderson’s win in the 300-meter hurdles, and Brian Zitterkopf’s second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles.
WAHS runners claim top honors
The Western Albemarle boys track team had an impressive showing at the Glen D. Loucks games held in White Plains, N.Y., on May 10.
The Warriors’ distance medley relay team of Kyle Satterwhite, Nick Ward, Adrian Sitler and Tyler Stutzman took top honors, recording one of the faster times in state history (10:11.32) in the event. The group also captured the DMR title at the Nike National Indoor Championships earlier this year. Western captured a win in the 4x800 meter relay as well.
In addition, Stutzman finished third in the 1600-meter run (4:15.42) and fourth in the 3200. Satterwhite took fifth in the 3200, and Ward was sixth in the 800.
OCHS keeps on winning
When the Orange County softball team dropped its fourth game of the season against William Monroe, coach John Henry Ryder, the 2008 Jefferson District coach of the year, was stern with his team.
“I told them, that’s it, we can’t lose any more games,” Ryder said.
Lose they haven’t. Behind a pair of ace pitchers in Micalah Sacre and Heather Jenkins, the Hornets (16-4) have made their way into the Jefferson District tournament final with a Region II bid already in their back pocket.
