Warriors finish 5th in Group AA
In Williamsburg, the Western Albemarle golf team shot a 311 on the second day of the Group AA golf tournament and a 612 overall to finish in fifth place over two days.
Patrick Leisure shot a 74 at Williamsburg National on Tuesday for a total of 152 to lead the Warriors, who finished two shots behind Lord Botetourt and Cave Spring at 610. Jamestown, playing on its home course, was first with a two-day total of 585, followed by Blacksburg at 588.
“We played really well the first day and OK today,” said Western coach Darren Maynard. “I would have liked to have finished third, and we had a shot. The top two outclassed us a little bit.”
Brett Engle, Alex O’Dell and Scott Wakely each shot 79 on Tuesday to round out the Warriors’ scoring. Landon Weis shot an even-par 72 on Monday, the best round by a Western player at the championships.
Clay O’Connor of Lord Botetourt won the individual title with a two-day total of 138, two shots better than second-place Hannah Pierce of King George. O’Connor fired a 67 in the second round.
