SUFFOLK — Eighteen-year-old Mikey Moyers delivered his second consecutive round of 66 in the VSGA’s 96th State Amateur Championship at Cedar Point Country Club.
In doing so Wednesday, the Stanardsville resident set the championship’s 36-hole stroke play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132. Moyers, a recent graduate of William Monroe High School, is the top seed for match play, which begins on Thursday.
Seven-time VSGA State Am champion Vinny Giles posted a two-day total of 133 at James River Country Club in Newport News in 1993.
McLean’s Peter Badawy previously posted a total of nine under (135) at par-72 Lowes Island Club’s Island Course in 2007.
After Wednesday’s play, defending champion Brinson Paolini of Virginia Beach was second with a two-day total of 139 and Fincastle’s Kyle Bailey and Nicholas Austin of Midlothian are seeded Nos. 3 and 4.
In second round action, Moyers made birdies at Nos. 1 and 3 before making his first two bogeys of stroke play qualifying at Nos. 4 and 5. Moyers answered by registering six birdies in an 11-hole stretch from Nos. 6-16.
Charlottesville’s Weston Eklund will face Moyers in Thursday’s opening round of match play.
