l J.W. Townsend Inc. is celebrating 25 years as a landscape contractor in Charlottesville. Founded in 1983, the company is divided into three departments: garden installation, landscape management and fine gardening, and landscape construction.
l Albemarle County has been named a “green government” as part of the inaugural Virginia Municipal League “Green Government Challenge.” The challenge evaluated local governments in the areas of policy adoption, energy efficiency, green buildings, waste management, vehicles, land use and transportation, water and air quality, employee incentives, education and community participation, schools and innovation. Albemarle County was recognized along with 40 other Virginia communities that participated in the challenge.
l The following Charlottesville-area architects and architectural firms were honored by the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects: Joseph Celentano and Stephen Davis of VMDO Architects, Award for Excellence in Architecture for the University of Virginia’s Massie Road Central Plant; Community Planning and Design LLC and Judith Kinnard, Award for Excellence in Architecture for Fifeville Hybrid Housing; and Train and Partners, Award for Excellence in Preservation for the University of Virginia’s Varsity Hall.
