Anthony Farmer, a native of Barboursville, was named Civilian Engineer of the Year for 2009 by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk. He was cited for his individual engineering achievements that have made a significant impact on the command. Farmer, a registered professional engineer in Virginia, is responsible for an engineering branch that supports a design workload of more than $340 million annually.

Harry Walker, an employee of Southern States Cooperative Inc. in Charlottesville, attended a comprehensive training program designed to qualify him as a Certified FeedMaster Specialist. The program augments the existing knowledge base of employees involved in advising customers on issues related to feeding dairy cattle.

The Martha Jefferson Hospital Board of Trustees presented the Henry B. Thielbar Leadership in Governance Award to Lillian BeVier for her dedication and leadership, especially during the planning of the new hospital. The award, the hospital’s highest honor, recognizes an individual who has significantly furthered the mission of Martha Jefferson Hospital through outstanding service, commitment and leadership over time.

Sean Taylor, Wintergreen Resort’s director of golf, spa and retail, was named 2009 Merchandiser of the Year by the PGA of America, Middle Atlantic Section. Taylor oversees two golf shops year round and a third during the non-snow season. The honor was awarded in the resort category and recognizes PGA members who have demonstrated superior skills as merchandisers in the promotion of golf and excellence in golf shop operations. Taylor is now eligible for the PGA’s national merchandiser award.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership announced the addition of John K. Jones of Gordonsville to its senior management team. A veteran public relations professional formerly with the Associated Press, Jones serves as the partnership’s director of communications, overseeing external communications and serving as spokesman for the partnership. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and serves on the board of the Rivanna Conservation Society.

Bankers Insurance of Charlottesville announced that three employees have won All-Star Team Awards for taking initiative, motivating others, persevering in adverse situations, having a positive attitude, demonstrating exemplary customer service and working well in a team environment. The winners are Barbara Loveland, who works with commercial insurance claims, holds the Accredited Advisor in Insurance designation and has been with Bankers for 25 years; Tracy Corea, a commercial insurance account manager, who holds the Accredited Customer Service Representative designation and has been with Bankers for 18 years; and Erin Kirby, an employee benefits account manager who has been with the company for six years.

The board of directors of the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank Network has approved Martin L. White’s decision to move to the role of chief operating officer. White will also serve as the interim chief executive officer while the board conducts a search for a new CEO. The network services nine cities and 25 counties in Virginia, including Charlottesville and Albemarle County.

Montague Miller & Company Realtors announced that the following agents have received e-PRO designations: Simone Alley, Doug Burke, Tammi Campbell, Sasha Farmer, Bud Kreh, Ronda Rennick McCauley, Pat Sury and Florence Lee Wellons. These Realtors have been recognized as leaders in the practice of online real estate and officially certified as e-Pro Internet Professionals.

The Louisa County Board of Supervisors announced that three members of the Community Development Department Building Inspection staff earned the Master Code Professional distinction. They are Roger “Skip” Harper, senior plans examiner; Casey Littlefield, building inspector; and Caleb Sulzen, building inspector.

J.W. Townsend Inc., Landscape Contractor, will be represented by Holly Chichester, sales/project coordinator, at the 2009 Wintergreen Horticultural Seminar hosted by the Georgia Green Industry Association. She will speak on designing water-wise gardens.

The Leadership Charlottesville Alumni Association presented its annual Leaders’ Leader Award to Sue Friedman, president and CEO of the Alzheimer’s Association, Central and Western Virginia Chapter. Friedman, who graduated from Leadership Charlottesville’s Class of 2000, was recognized for her many contributions to the community, including her service as chair of the Albemarle County School Board, member of the Leadership Charlottesville Development Council and member of the I Have A Dream Foundation.
