Craghead, Mallman lead final Migration show

Migration: A Gallery will open its final Charlottesville show with a reception from 5:30 to 8 this evening.

“The Dot and the Line,” drawings and collages by Brian Mallman and Warren Craghead, can be seen through Jan. 26.

Both artists draw on board and paper. Craghead also creates books, which will be available.

‘Energy Matters’ exhibit includes workshops

Spark!, an initiative of the Charlottesville Community Design Center, will present “Energy Matters” today through the end of the month in the CCDC gallery. An opening reception is set for 5 to 8 this evening.

The interactive installation is devoted to the importance of energy and offers information about reducing household energy use. A series of free community workshops connected to the exhibit will begin 6 p.m. Tuesday with “Home Energy $avings 101.”

Hall’s works on the walls at New Dominion

Snowden Hall’s recent oil and watercolor paintings will be on display today through Jan. 31 at New Dominion Bookshop at 404 E. Main St., on the Downtown Mall.

New year brings a new show to La Galeria

La Galeria will present “Les Painteurs pour la Nouvelle Annee,” a group show, and there’s a First Friday reception from 5 to 8 this evening.

Artists include Mary Porter, Matalie Deane, Christine Rich, Peter Almonte, Lois Kannensohn, Tyvin Rich, Patricia Travers and Gwen Hoyle. Store hours are 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and by appointment on Saturdays.

Bozart’s members’ show enters final week

Bozart Gallery continues its All-Members Holiday Show today through Jan. 9, when a new show will appear.

A reception is set for 5 to 9 this evening, and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. Expect select pieces to be available at reduced prices.

An After-Christmas Bargain Sale featuring original paintings, prints, clay, metal and wood pieces will continue through Sunday.

The Community Outreach Project exhibit will be shown Jan. 9 through Feb. 1, and prizes of $100 and $50 will be awarded in the “First Annual Promising Young High School Artist Exhibit.”

An opening reception will be 5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 9, and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.

 

Vernon’s paintings, photographs on display

Virginia Artists in Action will have a reception from 5:30 to 7:30 this evening at 1924 Arlington Blvd. featuring paintings and photographs by Susan Ema Vernon.

Works by Vernon and other Virginia artists can be seen at the VAIA gallery throughout January. A portion of the sales of Vernon’s works will go to support Live Arts.

Vernon has been a professional artist for more than three decades, and her watercolors, oil paintings and digital images have been selected for many juried shows and earned several awards of merit.

She attended Corcoran School of Art and George Washington University before heading to the University of Texas. She also worked at the Philadelphia Museum School of Art while owning and operating Jacob’s Granddaughters Art Gallery.

Forecast calls for deals in Art Upstairs exhibit

Art Upstairs will present “It’s Snowing Bargains: A Winter White Sale” through Feb. 1.

A First Fridays reception is planned for 5 to 8 this evening.

Paintings, photographs, pottery and jewelry ranging from $100 to $10 will be featured.

Center looks beyond face value of portraiture

“The Portrait” can be seen from Thursday through Jan. 31 at the Arts Center in Orange. An opening reception will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The exhibit features portraits by artists Francisco Centofani, Paolo Coppini, Jenny Davis, Thomas Marsh, Bradley Stevens and Henry Wingate.

Photo contest harvests prizes at orchards

Chiles Peach Orchard and Carter Mountain Orchard have named the winners of this year’s Photo Contest.

The winners in Chiles’ contest:

l First place: Chappell Turner of Crozet, who won a $30 Chiles gift certificate for a photo of Kate Turner.

l Second place: Kim Skinner of Charlottesville, who won a $20 gift certificate for a photo of Madison Skinner.

l Third place: Aimee Toomey of Richmond, who won a Chiles T-shirt for a photo of Matt, Calee, Gavin and Brock Toomey.

The Carter Mountain winners included:

l First place: Lisa Kiser of Richmond, who won a $30 Carter Mountain gift certificate for a photo of Logan Kiser.

l Second place: Will Lyster of Gordonsville, who won a $20 gift certificate for an aerial view of Carter Mountain.

l Third place: Tammy Newman of Moseley, who won a Carter Mountain T-shirt for a photo of the Newman family enjoying doughnuts.
