Romp, stomp, chomp and mind the pedicure

Virginia wineries are literally rolling out the barrels with activities for the Labor Day weekend.

Someone, who I will call Jane, sent me information on Wintergreen Winery’s Harvest Celebration. It brought back fond memories of “I Love Lucy.”

Of course, some of the episodes I love of “Lucy” seem to involve beverage references. In particular is when Lucy got a little tipsy during a job on a TV commercial as the Vitameatavegamin girl. (I have no idea how to spell it, but it makes me laugh anyway.)

Then there was the time she visited an Italian winery. Not that I’m obsessed, mind you, with episode 150 from season five, but the grape-stomping shoving match is a hoot, just the same.

It’s also what came to mind when I read about the “Romp, Stomp and Chomp” weekend in Nelson County.

I don’t suppose Fred and Ethel will be there, but I heard there will be music both Saturday and Sunday and, for those who would like to get a little closer to the grapes, there is a little barefootin’ in ye old barrel.

In all seriousness, I am not making this up.

Tamara Stone noted that there would be real live grape stomping to go along with music, wine tasting and food samplings.

There also will be guided wine tasting, including Wintergreen’s 2008 Viognier, Three Ridges White, Thomas Nelson White, Three Ridges Red, 2007 Raven’s Roost Cabernet Franc, 2007 Brent’s Mountain Merlot, 2006 Black Rock Red Reserve, Mill Hill Apple and Mulled Mill Hill Apple. (I don’t know if any of these are ingredients in Vitameatavegamin.)

However, I do know that Trent Wagler and the Steel Wheels will play their original Americana roots music on Saturday.

Their specialty is acoustic music, ranging from old-time to country to folk with a taste of gospel, blues, and rock and roll.

If you prefer a little more funk with your wine, Sunday’s guests, Six Chasing Seven, will pour on the high-energy reggae funk-influenced pop-rock.

There’s a bunch of stuff in store, and outside too — grape stomping, door prize drawings, gift shop specials.

The food will include baked breads, prosciutto, salamis, smoked trout, imported and domestic cheeses, pates, olives, crackers, chips and salsas and other “wine-friendly” light fare.

The stomping good time will be held rain or shine. No reservations are necessary.

Well behaved dogs are even welcome, and the owners say you are also welcome to bring a picnic and watch the fun from their picnic area along side the banks of the Rockfish River … just no shoving, please, if you get up the courage to crush a few.

If you do, you will have some “ ’splaining to do, Lucy.”

Ten bucks will get you in either day to experience all the fun. They say children are free, but I think that just means they don’t have to pay to get in.

Pardon me. I think I need a refill.
