Political cartoonist will draw at UVa
Award-winning political cartoonist Patrick Oliphant will be at the University of Virginia’s Harrison Institute auditorium of the Small Special Collections Library from 5:30 to 7 tonight for a conversation with P.J. O’Rourke and William Dunlap.
While discussing such topics as the Bush administration, the state of the economy, the campaign and Obama’s presidency, Oliphant will create a series of drawings inspired by the conversation.
“Leadership: Oliphant Cartoons and Sculpture from the Bush Years,” which includes cartoons, pencil sketches, oversized charcoal caricatures and sculpture in bronze and wax, also is on display at the UVa Art Museum.

Gala afternoon planned at center
The Artisans Center of Virginia in Waynesboro is hosting a gala afternoon with some of Virginia’s renowned artisans from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The afternoon will feature displays of artisan crafts, food from Bridget Meagher, owner of Alexander’s Restaurant in Roanoke, and music by R.W. Smith.
Ticket holder you will receive a hand crafted artisan creation valued at $100.

Les Yeux plans new
series with slide show
Les Yeux du Monde kicks off its spring season with an artists’ talk and slide show on Sunday.
Anne Chesnut will talk about “Saturated Strata II” at 4 p.m. Chesnut received her MFA from Yale University and currently merges her fine art with a career in graphic design. She will discuss her latest prints in which layers of meaning and imagery are combined and reconstituted through digital manipulation. She also will have some of her latest prints on hand for viewing, including a new edition for the Collectors Club.
This is the first of a series of arts events that will be held throughout the spring in various locations in and around Charlottesville. This one will take place at 841 Wolf Trap Road in Charlottesville. Reservations are required.

Gray takes oils
to gallery at Zero
Charlottesville artist Noelle Gray will be present a series of large oil paintings in artspace @Planet Zero.
“Figures in Abstract” will open today in the Frable Gallery and remain on display in the Richmond gallery through Feb. 22.
Her exhibition will feature her newest series of works.
Artspace is a non-profit gallery founded in 1988 and dedicated to contemporary visual and performing arts. The member-run gallery is at Zero E. Fourth St. in the Plant Zero Art Center.

Kluge-Ruhe offers opening and talk
There will be an opening reception from 5:30 to 7:30 tonight at Kluge-Ruhe Collection.
“Yuru-yururla: Women’s Painting from Yuendumu” will remain on view through May 3.
Francoise Dussart also will give a tour and lecture about the new display on Saturday. Dussart is a professor of anthropology and women’s studies at the University of Connecticut.
The guided tour will be at 10:30 a.m. and the lecture, “Warlpiri Grass Root Initiative: Acrylic Paintings in Central Australia,” is scheduled for 3 p.m. Reservations are required for the lecture, but not the morning tour. Call 244-0234.
Newcomb will toast end of exhibition
Photographer Kathryn Wagner’s exhibition at the University of Virginia’s Newcomb Hall Art Gallery closes with a celebratory reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. The exhibition features a new collection of photographs from Wagner’s travels. Works include prints of the California coast.
Wagner has recently shown and sold at the Pen and Brush Gallery in New York and with McGuffey Arts Center.
