‘Art of Paris’ opens at UVa Museum

“Matisse, Picasso and Modern Art in Paris: The T. Catesby Jones Collections at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and the University of Virginia Art Museum” opens today at the UVa Art Museum.

The exhibition, which runs through April 24, reunites artworks that were given in 1947 as bequests to UVa and the Museum of Fine Arts.

The selection of 88 works includes masterpieces of modern French art from 1904 through 1946. Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Georges Braque, Raoul Dufy, Juan Gris, Jacques Lipchitz, Andre Masson and Georges Rouault are among the artists represented.

“Matisse, Picasso, and Modern Art in Paris” is the first comprehensive assessment of Jones’ legacy as a collector.

Reception on tap for PVCC faculty

The annual exhibit of works by the art faculty at Piedmont Virginia Community College opens today with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m.

The show runs through March 14.

Three of the exhibitors are full-time faculty members.

Beryl Solla, art department chair and gallery director, will show ceramic sculpture. John Hancock will show mixed-media watercolor pieces.  Tom Clarkson will exhibit wheel-thrown ceramic vessels.

The part-time instructors showing works in this exhibit are: George Andrews, new paintings; Fenella Belle, fabric and thread; Pam Black, mixed media drawings; Rosita Gonzalez, digital photographs; Stacey Evans, photography; Rob Tarbell, large mixed-media work; Ted Thill, wheel-thrown clay forms, and Rebekah Wostrel, wheel- thrown wall pieces in porcelain and mixed media.

VAIA moves into

new gallery space

Virginia Artists in Action will officially open its new space at 112 W. Main St. in York Place on the Mall on Wednesday. An artists reception is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 6.

The first exhibit will feature paintings, photographs and sculptures by local artists.

The member-run organization headquartered in Charlottesville is dedicated to promoting artists living and working in Virginia while donating a portion of their proceeds to Virginia non-profits, according to Candace Schoner, the founder and executive director of VAIA.

Virginia Artists in Action is open to artist’s works consisting of music, 2-D, 3-D, dance, poetry-writing, clothing and mixed-media.

The new space provides a large venue for displaying and selling members artwork and a place where members can meet.

The organization is seeking new members and working on scheduling a series of events including live musical performances, video and film screenings, dance, poetry readings and book signings.
