Toasting February’s finest
l La Galeria
“Mountain Cascades,” a collection of photographs depicting waterfall scenes in Virginia and the West by Mary Porter, opens with a reception from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

l Bozart
“Triptych City,” Madeleine Watkins’s new works in oil and acrylic, will be on display through March. 1. A reception is planned from 5 to 9 tonight. Refreshments will be served.
l The Bridge
The gallery space is hosting a range of audio events this month in lieu of a traditional art exhibit. Gallery hours will be from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, and there will be streaming audio during these hours.
An opening reception with Julie Shapiro of the Third Coast International Audio Festival will be from 6 to 8 tonight. The audio installations “Panta Rhei,” “Horses” and other audio artworks will be on display.

l McGuffey Art Center
John Hancock will be showing drawings and assemblages in “Natural Family History” in the Main Gallery. In the Downstairs Hall Gallery, Lee Alter will be showing a series of watercolors and graphite drawings called “Time, Space and Connection.” Also downstairs is “Building a Bridge: Art Show” by various artists and residents of the organization Building A Bridge, supported living for adults with brain injuries and related neurological disorders.
In the Upstairs Galleries, associate members will be showing “Love and Lust” in celebration of Valentine’s Day.
The shows run through March 1. The opening reception is from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. tonight.

l Second Street Gallery
Jeanne Drevas will transform the local gallery into an indoor forest with her site-specific installation, “Grove.”
Drevas envisions hanging between 1,200 and 1,500 bamboo culms, harvested from groves around Charlottesville, from the ceiling of the main gallery.
There will be an opening reception for First Fridays, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., with an artist talk at 6:30 p.m.
The exhibition will run concurrently with “Light House: The Luxury of Fear,” presented in the Dove Gallery.

l Second Street’s Dove Gallery
Light House students will present “The Luxury of Fear,” a video installation exhibition through Feb. 28.
The videos were created specifically for Second Street Gallery by high school students during Video as Art, a workshop at Light House.
Participating students include Chris Brown, Elyse Smith and Dave Brown from Monticello High School; Anna Germano and Kate Hancock from Charlottesville High School; John Irving from Buford Middle School, and Tessa Paget-Brown and Alex Wilson, Renaissance School.
Mentors for the project were Light House managing director Sam Baker and photographers Billy Hunt and Anna Ma.

Recent paintings by Brandon L. Garrett is on display through March 2.
“Acrylic Pizza” opens with a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight.
The artist began with local ingredients, which were peeled, diced, kneaded, arranged, placed in a 500-degree oven, photographed, and then eaten.
Garrett also has shown his work in Brooklyn, N.Y., Bethesda, Md., New Haven, Conn.

The 360-degree panoramic photography of James O. Phelps will open tonight with reception from 5:30 to 7:30 at Siips, at 212 E. Main St.
Phelps will discuss his camera and the technique he uses to create his images. He uses sepia tones to enhance historical landscapes.
There will be a cash bar for the reception.

“Children at Play” will open with a reception from 5 to 7:30 tonight.
The result of a three-month traveling design studio, the exhibition presents development plans for immigrant communities in Minneapolis, Minn., Montreal, San Francisco and Staten Island, N.Y., through the artwork and imagination of local children. Photographs, videos and more than 200 drawn interventions by children in these neighborhoods proposed a kid’s-eye approach.
l C’ville Arts
There will be an opending reception from 6 to 9 p.m. tonight for Diana Branscome’s new show.
Her work includes semiprecious gemstone and pearl jewelry, art glass suncatchers, and a line of bowls, plates and jewelry made from recycled glass. The exhibit continues throughout February. For more details, call 972-9500.
l Ruffstuff Gallery
“Concept to Reality,” an exhibition featuring work by Marcy Linton, will be on display on the first floor of Ruffin Hall.
Linton is an assistant professor of costume technology in the University of Virginia’s Department of Drama. The exhibit features costumes and crafts that illustrate her process of translating the costume designer’s vision to the stage. Designers’ renderings, sketches and patterns also will be on display.
An opening reception will be at 6 tonight, and Linton will give a gallery talk at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
