Family Jam is back at UVa
The University of Virginia Art Museum resumes its children’s program, the Family Art JAM, next week.
On Sunday, the museum will offer “Cartooning: Exploring the Oliphant and Daumier Exhibitions” for children ages 4 to 12.
Children and their grownups will receive a docent-led tour of “Leadership: Oliphant Cartoons and Sculpture from the Bush Years. ” The tour will focus on the aspects of Oliphant’s cartooning that children can understand, and help them comprehend what the artist is saying.
The tour also will include a companion exhibit on the work of Honore Daumier (1808-1879), whom Oliphant sites as a key inspiration of his work.
Following the tour, students spend hands-on time with Charlottesville cartoon artist Warren Craghead III, whose work includes comics, drawings and illustrated books. His most recent book is based on the poetry of Guillaume Apollinaire, “How to be Everywhere.”
Craghead will talk about common cartoon language, understanding and creating symbols and using drawings to communicate ideas. Students and their caretakers will create their own cartoon stories, and Craghead will help convert them into printable, foldable books.
The Family Art JAM for 4- to 7-year-olds and their caretakers or parents will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Seven- to 12-year-olds are invited to attend from 3 to 5 p.m. with a parent or caretaker.
