The University of Virginia New Music Ensemble brings in guests for tonight’s concert — the UVa Clarinet Quartet, the improvisational trio Pinko Communoids, violist Johanna Beaver, oboist Aaron Hill, flutist Mary Anne Kidwell and percussionist Michael Schutz.

I-Jen Fang directs the ensemble. Members include Andrew Bennett-Jackson, Megan England, Matthew Lerner and Lanier Sammons.

The New Music Ensemble will play works by Eugene Bozza, Matthew Burtner, Peter Garland and Steve Reich.

The UVa Clarinet Quartet, which includes Nancy Garlick, Patricia Tertell, Danielle Waller and Rob Smithson, will present a three-movement work, “Divertimento” by Alfred Uhl.

Pinko Communoids will perform “Fascicles,” a 2008 work that features video and image artist Chia-chi Charlie Chang.

The trio also will team up with the New Music Ensemble to play “3+5,” written this year.

Judith Shatin’s “Time to Burn” is for oboe and two percussionists. Zae Munn’s “Start Dancing” is written for viola and four Roto-toms. Also on the program is a duet for flute and guitar by Astor Piazzolla.

Folks who’d like to branch out and try something new can hear works by some of today’s innovative composers and writers of the recent past. Pieces range from the sublime to the silly. Instrumentation runs the gamut from acoustic strings and brass to electronic.

Admission is free. For details, call 924-3984.
