World Music Festival’s listeners can come and go as they please

The inaugural Virginia World Music Festival will present seven ensembles playing music from around the globe from noon until about 8 p.m. Sunday in Cabell Hall Auditorium.

Listen for Charlottesville Javanese Gamelan at noon, Gamelan Raga Kusuma from the University of Richmond at 1 p.m., the College of William & Mary Nordic Folk Music and Dance Ensemble at 2:15 p.m., the William & Mary Appalachian Ensemble at 3:15 p.m., the William & Mary Middle Eastern Music Ensemble at 4:15 p.m., the University of Virginia Klezmer Ensemble at 5:15 p.m. and the UVa African Music and Dance Ensemble at 6:30 p.m.

Listeners are free to come and go and to stay as long as they like.

Associate professor Michelle Kisliuk leads the UVa African Music and Dance Ensemble, and assistant professor Joel Rubin heads the UVa Klezmer Ensemble.

From William & Mary, associate professor Anne Rasmussen directs the Middle Eastern Music Ensemble, visiting assistant professor David Kaminsky leads the Nordic Folk Music and Dance Ensemble and UVa’s Pete Frostic is in charge of the Appalachian Ensemble.

Assistant professor Andrew McGraw of the University of Richmond directs Gamelan Raga Kusuma, and ethnomusicologist Cynthia Benton-Groner heads Charlottesville Javanese Gamelan.
