Cool deal on one hot show
It was 34 degrees when I woke up this morning.
What’s so entertaining about that? Well, if you were checking into a hotel in Fairfax County, it would cost you $34 dollars to stay the night. And that sounds pretty entertaining to me.
Of course, there is a catch … you have to stay two nights and the weather-related promotion is only good for Saturday night. But if you have a buddy, think of the savings. Split the cost. You pay the weather rates, and allow him or her to pay the second night.
Clever.
The reason I bring this to your attention is that some of you might want to make a road trip to on Dec. 7 to see a bit of home.
“Live From the Hook,” the documentary film about the music scene in Charlottesville, will be showing at the Arlington Cinema and Draft House. No holiday party would be complete without a concert, so members of Charlottesville’s music scene will be along for the ride. After the special 5 p.m. screening, some of the original members of the Skip Castro Band will perform.
The guys in the band – you know them well – promise to make an early night of it.
If you don’t know them well, you will after the film. The Skip Castro Band was one of the groups that helped build our musical reputation and pave the way for the likes of our very own Dave Matthews Band.
OK, I will name drop just a little. Charlie Pastorfield, Bo Randall, Corky Schoonover and Danny Beirne (who has been living in much warmer Florida).
They say the concert will be over by 9 p.m., which would allow you to make it home, if you were so inclined.
If you go, the doors will open at 4:30. Tickets are on sale now, but — in keeping with the good-deal theme of this here column — if you order tickets by Nov. 30, you can buy five general admission seats and get the sixth one at half price.
General admission is $25. If you would like one of the VIP Producer’s Club seats, it will cost you $50. But hey, you might have that much left over from your reduced hotel fare.
Wink, wink.

If you can’t make the trip, but would like to see the film or buy it for the music lover on your holiday shopping list, check out http://www.livefromthehook.com. It only costs $30, which could be about the cost of that hotel room.
And I am not making it up about those hotel rates. It’s a special weekend offer in place starting Saturday and running through Dec. 27. According to Mark Gundersen, who alerted me to the deal, your Saturday night stay will be “frozen” to match the Fahrenheit outdoor temperature recorded at Dulles International Airport at noon on the Saturday of your arrival.
“If it’s 15 degrees, you pay $15 dollars on your first night,” he said.
You also have to book 72 hours in advance, but you can keep up with the Dulles weather at http://www.weatherbug.com. To find out which Fairfax hotels are playing, check out http://www.fxva.com.
And to add to your Black Friday wish list … did you know that Trivial Pursuit has a new 25th Anniversary Edition, Deb?
Here’s a few trivial samples deemed appropriate for the occasion:
1) What provision were the Pilgrims running low on, forcing them to land on Plymouth Rock?
2) How many turkeys were served on the first Thanksgiving?
3) Who was the first “Friends” character to get his or her head stuck in a Thanksgiving turkey?
Answers:
1-Beer, 2-Four, 3-Joey.
