Spend a weekend in area studios

The 14th annual Artisan Center of Virginia’s Artisans Studio Tour will be 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Seventeen studios featuring professional artisans are included in the tour. Food and beverages from local establishments will be provided at each site.

Grab your lunch for a Second treat

Second Street Gallery will have a brown-bag lunchtime event from 12:15 to 1 p.m. Nov. 21.

The curator of SSG’s November exhibition, “The Slow Reveal: Leah Bailis and Dragana Crnkaj,” will discuss works. This event is open to all SSG Members. To register for this event or become a member, call 977-7284 or email member@second

Carroll will lecture at Kluge-Ruhe

Khadija Carroll of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University will give a talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kluge-Ruhe Art Collection.

Carroll will discuss the “Painting Governor, the Aboriginal Silhouettist and the Explorers’ Encyclopaedia of Australia: Histories of the Art from Australia’s Lawless 19th-Century.”

Carroll is an art historian from Melbourne based in Berlin and Boston. She works on colonial and critical theory in the history of art and architecture department at Harvard University. For reservations,  call 244-0234.

 

Piedmont will open two new shows

Piedmont Virginia Community College opens two new exhibit today, “3 Fabulous Babes” and “Looks Good on Paper.” There will be a reception from 5 to 7 this evening, and the show will remain on view through Jan. 22.

“3 Fabulous Babes” features Beryl Solla, gallery director and professor of art at PVCC; and Angi Curreri and Silvia Lizama, fellow artists and friends from their days at the University of Miami.  “Looks Good on Paper” features Matt Pamer, Russell U. Richards and Tim Michel, three local artists whose primary medium is paper. For more information, call 961-5362.

 

See painting techniques at Creme

VIETRI founder Susan Gravely and Italian artisans Giuseppe Potenza, a maestro painter; Toni Solimene, owner; and Enzo Liguri, production manager, will visit Creme de la Creme from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Potenza will demonstrate painting techniques and sign purchased pieces as Susan Gravely speaks about the inspiration behind the designs. Call 296-7018 for for details.

 

Ziegler will discuss his latest projects

Artist Mel Ziegler, the 2008-09 recipient of the University of Virginia Arts Board’s Big Bang Award, has been commissioned to create a Grounds-wide interactive public art project and exhibition for Ruffin Gallery this spring.

Ziegler, who is professor and chairman of art at Vanderbilt University, will give a lecture on his previous projects at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Campbell Hall, Room 158.

A reception will follow on Ruffin Hall’s third floor.

Orange tour includes five galleries

Four contemporary art galleries and the Arts Center in Orange have launched “In the Artist’s Eye,” a five-week celebration that continues through Nov. 29. On Saturday all five galleries will be holding open houses between 2 and 5 p.m.
