Albemarle Ensemble welcomes Tobin

The University of Virginia Chamber Music Series begins its new season at 8 p.m. Thursday with a concert by the Albemarle Ensemble and guest bass clarinetist James Tobin in Cabell Hall Auditorium.

The Albemarle Ensemble, which has been in residence at UVa since 1987, includes flutist Alan Cox, clarinetist Nancy Garlick, bassoonist Elizabeth Roberts and two new members — Aaron Hill on oboe and Ian Zook on horn.

The program will include Sir Malcolm Arnold’s “Three Shanties for Wind Quintet, Op. 4,’’ as well as Antonio Vivaldi’s “Concerto in G minor, RV 103’’ for flute, oboe and bassoon; Ferenc Farkas’ “Hungarian Dance,’’ Elliott Carter’s “Woodwind Quintet’’ and Leos Janacek’s “Mladi.’’

Tobin will join the quintet to perform “Mladi,’’ which transforms the melodies and rhythms of Moravian speech into music.

Tobin is clarinet clinician at Albemarle High School, the winds instructor at St. Anne’s-Belfield School and the Lower School band director for the Covenant School.

He also maintains a private studio.

A reception will follow the concert.
