Learn the art of jazz performance at 214, UVa with guitarist, singer

Fans who want to learn more about how jazz is performed can catch workshops and performances by guitarist Paul Bollenback and vocalist Chris McNulty this weekend.
The Richardson Guitar Studio will present a jazz master class with Bollenback at 2 p.m. Saturday at the 214 Community Arts Center.
Participants will perform for Bollenback and get his feedback.
There will be a question-and-answer session, and then Bollenback will present a brief performance with bassist Cameron Ralston and drummer Shareef Taher.
Participants must register in advance, and reservations are recommended for audience members. Admission is $30 for participants and $10 for spectators.
Bollenback and McNulty will perform 8 p.m. Saturday, also at the 214 Community Arts Center. Taher and Ralston will join them.
Bollenback has performed with leading jazz musicians, including Charlie Byrd, Herb Ellis, David “Fathead’’ Newman, Jimmy Bruno, Joey DeFrancesco and Sandip Burman.
Australian-born McNulty’s latest CD is “Whispers the Heart.’’

At the University of Virginia, Bollenback and McNulty will present a workshop at 4:30 this afternoon in Old Cabell Hall Room B012.
In the first half, Bollenback will speak about the issues guitarists face when they approach jazz.
The second half will bring Bollenback and McNulty together to demonstrate how they approach blending guitar and vocals as a duo.
