‘Symphony Under the Stars’ is Saturday

Orchestra fans will get their own opportunity this weekend to get outside.
The Charlottesville and University Symphony Orchestra will present an outdoor pops concert, “Symphony Under the Stars,” at 8 p.m. Saturday at the McIntire Amphitheater at the University of Virginia.
Music director Kate Tamarkin will lead the musicians in a variety of popular works that will include light classics, movie themes and show tunes.
The program includes Broadway favorites from “West Side Story” and “South Pacific,” a suite from the opera “Carmen,”  the “An American Tail” theme “Somewhere Out There,” John Williams’ theme from “E.T.,” “Variations on a Shaker Tune” by Aaron Copland and Leroy Anderson’s “Trumpeter’s Lullaby,” which will feature principal trumpet Paul Neebe as soloist.
John Philip Sousa’s “The Stars and Stripes Forever” also is on the program, which is presented by the University Programs Council.
Franz von Suppe’s “Light Cavalry Overture” is among the classics, as is the pas de six from the overture to “William Tell” by Gioacchino Rossini.
Bring lawn chairs, pillows and blankets for comfort. Picnics are welcome, but alcohol is prohibited.
The concert is free, and no tickets are required. The rain date is scheduled for 8 p.m. Sunday in the same spot. For details, visit http://www.virginia.edu/music/stars.
