Romanian pianist Radu Lupu will make his first Charlottesville appearance next week.

Lupu will perform works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Franz Schubert 8 p.m. Tuesday in Cabell Hall Auditorium as part of the Tuesday Evening Concert Series.

He is internationally known for his interpretations of Johannes Brahms, W.A. Mozart, Leos Janacek, Bela Bartok, Schubert and Beethoven.

Lupu’s honors include winning first prize in the Van Cliburn International Pianoforte Competititon in 1966 and the Leeds Piano Competition in 1969. He began to build an American audience by performing in 1972 with the Cleveland Orchestra under the baton of Daniel Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony with Carlo Maria Giulini.

He began studying the piano at age 6, and at 12 he made his public debut in a concert for which he composed all the works.

In Tuesday’s program, Radu will perform Beethoven’s “Piano Sonata No, 9 in E Major, Op. 14, No. 1,” “Piano Sonata No. 10 in G Major, Op. 14, No. 2” and “Piano Sonata No. 8 in C minor, Op. 13, ‘Pathetique’ ’’ and Schubert’s “Piano Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960.”

Tickets for the concert, which is made possible in part by the Maurice Amado Foundation, may be obtained by calling 924-3984. They will be $28 for orchestra seats, $24 for loge and balcony, $12 for student seats and those with partial views and $5 for the one-hour student rush.

Parking in the Central Grounds Parking Garage on Emmet Street is recommended, and there will be free University of vVirginia bus service.

Lupu’s CDs will be available in Cabell Hall at the performance.
