Play On! — A New Virginia Theatre opens its latest musical, “The Boy Friend,” at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Theatre at Ix.
Sandy Wilson’s dance-filled musical, set in the 1920s, follows the young ladies from Madame Dubonnet’s Finishing School on the French Riviera as they hope to find boyfriends and husbands.
Polly Browne wants a boyfriend, but her father forbids it, fearing a suitor would seek her out for her money. So when Polly falls in love with a messenger boy, she pretends to Dubonnet’s poor secretary.
Marcello Rollando directs the musical, which is the second show in Play On’s fourth season. The original production in 1954, at London’s Wyndham Theatre, ran for 2,084 performances, and Ken Russell directed a film version.
The production runs through Nov. 15. Performances are at 8 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. Sundays.
Tickets are $17, $15 seniors and students, for evening shows and $15 and $13 for matinees. Thursday shows are on a “pay what you will” basis. Learn more at PlayOnTheatre.org or call 872-0184.
