Poet reads his latest at New Dominion

Sam Witt will read from and sign copies of his new book of poetry, “Sunflower Brother,” at 10 a.m. Saturday.

His book of poems written for the dead acknowledge death and limitation but try to reinvest the mourning self with life.

Witt is the winner of the Cleveland State University Poetry Center Open Competition.

Born in Wimbledon, England, he grew up in North Carolina and Virginia and graduated from the University of Virginia and the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Witt won the Katherine Nason Bakeless First Book Prize in 200 for “Everlasting Quail.”

He is serving as visiting assistant professor in poetry at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Crozet’s book club serves up ‘Lobster’

Branches of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library have a variety of events in the coming week.

At Crozet Library, Monday Evening Book Club members will tackle “Last Night at the Lobster” by Stewart O’Nan at 7 p.m. Monday.

The story follows restaurant manager Manny Deleon as he juggles disgruntled cooks, a waitress with whom he has ended an affair and unreasonable patrons during the final work shift at a restaurant that’s closing down.

At Gordon Avenue Library, Live Poets Society will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday to share original poetry.

At Greene County Library, join the Book Discussion Group at 7 p.m. Thursday to talk about “The Book Thief” by Markus Zusak.

Trying to make sense of the horrors of World War II, Death tells the story of Liesel, a young girl whose book-stealing and storytelling talents help sustain her family and the Jewish man they are hiding.

Author signs copies of work on dying

New Dominion Bookshop will present a reading and book signing by Donna Authers, who will read selections from “A Sacred Walk: Dispelling the Fear of Death and Caring for the Dying’’ at 12:15 p.m. Thursday.

“A Sacred Walk” is a collection of vignettes from the lives of people who have faced death. See story on Page C1.
