Bence delves into
new ‘Revelations’
Karen M. Bence will be at New Dominion Bookshop at 12:15 p.m. Friday to read from and sign copies of her new book, “Midnight Revelations.”
One of the “Dark Whispers” series, this book is Sara and her family, who are ecstatic when they move into a vintage farmhouse. Eerie events, howver, soon begin to threaten their bliss.
Bence graduated with a bachelor of arts in psychology from Dickinson College and a master’s in social work from the University of Pennsylvania. A former social worker, psychotherapist and educator, Bence also is an avid equestrian and dog breeder.
Like the protagonist of “Midnight Revelations,” she also engaged in a determined search for her biological mother. Bence llives with her husband and son on a horse farm outside of Atlanta.

Turner is among guest readers
Barnes and Noble is hosting special storytime events in honor of Black History Month.
The guest readers include Rick Turner, executive director of the Charlottesville NAACP. Readings will take place between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. An activity table will be set up for the children and refreshments will be served from 12:30pm-1:00 pm.
Artwork by Charlottesville’s Rose Hill also will be on display.

Peter Skinner signs his latest novel
New Dominion Bookshop will host a reading and book-signing by Peter Skinner.
Skinner will from his new book “The Bells of Moses Henry” at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
Skinner’s latest novel, chronicles the adventures of a 7-year-old mulatto boy named Willie Graves during the 1950s. Blamed for the murder of his father, Willie navigates the physical and psychological landscape of Virginia — from his mother’s bordello in Charlottesville to Chesapeake and the dark and foreboding Dismal Swamp.
Skinner, who was nominated for a Library of Virginia Library Award, also wrote “White Buffalo”. He is the father of three children and a stepson.

Women’s groups join for open discussion
Women’s Health Virginia and the Women’s Initiative will hold their next Women’s Wellness Book Group from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss Daniel J. Levinson’s “The Seasons of a Woman’s Life. The group will convene at Barnes & Noble in Barracks Road Shopping Center
The book focuses on women’s psychosocial growth from the late teens to middle age, building on interviews with homemakers, corporate-financial career women and academics. The book will serve as a springboard for discussion and people who are interested, but who may not have time to read the book are welcome. Participants are encouraged to RSVP to 872-0047.
Thomson pens 15th in Jefferson series
‘A Passion for Nature’ is the latest volume on Thomas Jefferson written by Keith Thomson. It is the 15th title in the Monticello Monograph Series published by the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.
Thomas Jefferson’s deep interest in the natural world — from the flora and fauna of Albemarle County to the exotic specimens gathered by Lewis and Clark on their trek to the Pacific — and how it shaped his life as a philosopher, farmer and founding father is the subject of ‘A Passion for Nature: Thomas Jefferson and Natural History.’ The Monticello Monograph Series was established in 1993 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Jefferson’s birth.
The series’ soft cover books, which are designed and written for a wide audience, address various aspects of Jefferson’s interests and accomplishments.
Two will share big Lincoln Prize funds
Two authors of books on Abraham Lincoln’s military leadership have been named winners of the Lincoln Prize and will share the $50,000 cash award, organizers announced Thursday, the 200th anniversary of the president’s birth.
James McPherson, best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning Civil War history, “The Battle Cry of Freedom,” was cited for “Tried by War: Abraham Lincoln as Commander in Chief.” The other winner was Craig L. Symonds for “Lincoln and His Admirals: Abraham Lincoln, the U.S. Navy, and the Civil War.”
