‘Little Women’ production has blend of literature and history

Old Michie Theatre will present "Little Women: Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy'' at 7 tonight and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Based on the writings of Louisa May Alcott and adapted by youth theater dramatist Sandra Fenichel Asher, the play is a dramatic comedy in two acts.

Fans of "Little Women'' will recognize the beloved characters from the March family.

The cast includes Rebecca Edwards as Jo, Kathleen Deighan as Meg, Annie Brockman as Beth and Annabelle Castleman as Amy.

Elizabeth Hylton is Marmee, Brendan Gallagher-Ford is Mr. March, Lydia Brunk is Aunt March and Brittany Wentz is Hannah Mullet.

Austin Brouchard plays Laurie, Joseph Hylton plays Mr. Lawrence, John Michael Seng-Wheeler plays John Brooke, Corinne Riley is Sallie Gardiner, Kelly Hancock is Annie Moffett and Isabel Sullivan plays Kitty Bryant. Alexandra Sansovich plays Grace. Kevin Costanzo plays Frank.

Caroline Barnes plays Kate and is Jo's understudy. Madeleine Deighan plays Ned and is Meg's understudy. Caroline Hylton plays Fred and is Marmee's understudy.

Anna Smutney is piano accompanist, plays a picnic guest and is Beth's understudy.

Sheila Gallagher-Ford is Amy's understudy and plays a neighbor and friend of the March family.

Frances Furlong directs. Western Albemarle High School senior Kelley Van Dilla is set designer.

Tina Riley is costumer, and Four County Players loaned the Civil War-era period costumes.

John Wheeler and Beverly Seng are dance consultants, and they trained the cast to perform an authentic American waltz and polka from the period.

The play continues through Feb. 10.
