Authorities undecided on possible crash charges

Authorities have made no decision on whether to charge the 54-year-old Waynesboro man who drove a tractor-trailer into Sydney Nichol Aichs’ car Friday, killing the Albemarle High School student.

Police say Kenneth Barbour, a driver for Don B. Swisher Trucking Corp., failed to stop for a red light at the intersection of U.S. 29 and Ashwood Boulevard, plowing into Aichs’ 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier. Aichs, a 16-year-old junior, was preparing to make a left turn onto southbound U.S. 29.

The Albemarle County Police Department is still in discussion with the commonwealth’s attorney over possible charges, said Lee Catlin, county spokeswoman.

Funeral services for Aichs will be held at 2 p.m. today at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3101 Fontaine Ave. Extended.

Today, a U.S. Foods Truck almost recreated an identical tragedy to that of the loss of Sydney Aichs just one stoplight North of Ashwood.  Thankfully myself and the driver to the right of me were able to stop ourselves and the line of cars behind us from fully crossing the intersection which allowed the US Foods truck to plow through without slamming into anyone or thing.  VDOT, do something.  I am, I’m moving away from Rte. 29.

I think this needs to be looked at very carefully, I’m sorry that a tragic had to happen before VDOT finally realizes that this is a bad light. The road needs to be redone, the hill needs to be taken out, not to say him running the light wasn’t his fault but its a tragic either way you look at it.
