Crozet Meadows to get $700,00 of block grant
A Crozet low-income development for the elderly will get $700,000 as part of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine’s Virginia Community Development Block Grant.
The project, called Crozet Meadows, includes 28 existing units, which were built in 1979. The units will be renovated and 38 new ones will be built.
Kaine on Friday announced the details of the more than $10 million block grant, which will go to 18 low-income projects in 21 Virginia localities.
“We are very pleased to have been selected to receive … funding for the Crozet Meadows project, which will respond to a critical community need for affordable housing for the elderly,” said Ron White, Albemarle’s director of housing.
The rental units serve low-income elderly residents. Jordan Development Corp., a nonprofit, operates the complex.
The new design will incorporate better accessibility, and the new units will be built and the old ones renovated using environmentally friendly methods, Albemarle spokeswoman Lee Catlin said.
Funds from the grant will help with erosion control, water and sewer, curbs and sidewalks, landscaping and storm-water management.
About 83 residents will live in the renovated and new units, Catlin said.
County and private funding will also help cover the costs of the project.
