Daly named official director of Charlottesville parks, recreation
Charlottesville has promoted Brian Daly to be its new director of parks and recreation.
Daly, who had been serving as acting director since January, has more than 22 years of experience in the field.
The position came open when former director Mike Svetz left for a similar position in Goodyear, Ariz.
Daly joined the city as assistant director in 2005.
“I am confident that he will build on our solid foundation and keep the city a top destination for citizens and visitors seeking quality recreation experiences,” said City Manager Gary O’Connell in a news release. “Charlottesville has always been a leader in urban green-space management and recreation and I know that he is the right person to move us to the next level.”
Before working in Charlottesville, Daly was employed in Fairfax County, where he began as an assistant to the chairman of the county’s Board of Supervisors before rising from a seasonal worker to director of park operations at the Fairfax County Park Authority.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department employs more than 60 people, manages 25 parks and natural areas and maintains the Downtown Mall.
