Emergency teams rescue man in creek
A call to the emergency dispatch center about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday reported that a man had fallen into the Rivanna River, which spurred responses by numerous fire and rescue stations, police and a dive-rescue team from Lake Monticello.
A call was also put out for a rescue boat.
Charlottesville firefighters soon arrived and searched up and down a section of the river near the U.S. 250 Free Bridge, according to Peter Carpenter, a fire battalion chief with the Charlottesville department.
They soon discovered that the man had not fallen into the river; he had slipped into a creek about 2 feet deep, Carpenter said. The muddy banks were 5 or 6 feet high.
The man was lying in the creek, near Caroline Street in the city, with only his head above the water, said Carpenter, repeating the account of a firefighter who responded to the scene.
Firefighters pulled the man from the creek, and he was taken to a local hospital, Carpenter said.
The extent of his injuries could not be determined.
“Hypothermia was a concern,” Carpenter said, adding that the man did not complain of any injuries.
One rescue worker at the scene said it appeared that the victim may have been drinking.
