Fire crews battle stubborn fire

Fire crews from Charlottesville, Seminole Trail and Monticello have worked since Saturday evening to extinguish a smoldering fire at a temporary University of Virginia composting located on Fontaine Avenue. Crews on the scene used a backhoe expose still smoldering areas of compost, mulch and leaves. Fire officials believe extreme heat and other weather elements aided combustion.
