The Waynesboro truck driver indicted in the May 9 crash that killed 16-year-old Sydney Aichs turned himself in Thursday, police said.

Kenneth Barbour faces charges of involuntary manslaughter and reckless driving.

The 54-year-old was arrested and taken before a magistrate Thursday mor-ning. He was released on a $7,500 bond, and is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 4.

The investigation revealed that Barbour’s tractor-trailer was traveling north on U.S. 29 at about 7 a.m. May 9 and failed to stop for a red light, according to Albemarle police Lt. Todd Hopwood. Aichs’ 1999 Chevy Cavalier pulled from the Forest Lakes neighborhood to turn south onto the highway. As Barbour’s truck entered the intersection, it struck Aichs’ vehicle.

Aichs, an Albemarle High School student, was pronounced dead at the scene. Barbour, who was employed by the Don B. Swisher Trucking Corp., was not injured.

If convicted on the involuntary manslaughter charge, Barbour faces up to 10 years in prison. The reckless driving charge carries with it a possible sentence of 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
