Weather forecasts call for rain, snow

Say goodbye to the spring-like weather of the past two days and hello again to the cold and, maybe, snow.

By this morning there could be as much as a half-inch of snow on the ground, according to the National Weather Service, which was calling for a mixture of rain and snow Monday night and this morning.

Today will be much colder than Monday’s high of 53 degrees and Sunday’s 62.

The low is expected to reach 21 tonight with a chance of snow showers, according to the National Weather Service report. There is a slight chance of snow during the day.

Wednesday could bring more snow, and the temperature might drop to the teens at night. The weather service warned that snow could accumulate but did not indicate how much might fall.

The weather service put the chance of snow both days at 20 percent.

The Virginia Department of Transportation was watching conditions, primarily west of Charlottesville, and had staff ready in Nelson County on Monday night.

Last week, freezing rain and sleet forced Albemarle schools to close two days and Charlottesville one.

Both systems announced makeup dates Monday. Albemarle schools were scheduled to close Feb. 16 and 17 for staff workdays but instead will be open for students, too. City students will still get Feb. 16 off but will have to go the following day.

The last day of school for both systems is June 5.

The weather should clear up Thursday, and on Friday and Saturday temperatures might climb back into the 50s.
