A member of the Buckingham County Board of Supervisors has been charged with driving under the influence.
Supervisor Joe N. Chambers Jr. was pulled over by police on Route 20 and arrested at 9:48 p.m. Monday, according to court records.
The Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office declined to provide any details on the case.
Chambers will appear in Buckingham County General District on April 25 in connection with the charges.
Chambers did not immediately return a call for comment Friday afternoon.
The DUI charges are the latest in a string of troubles facing Chambers.
In late February, an investigation by The Daily Progress found that Chambers owed Buckingham County more than four years’ worth of unpaid real estate and personal property taxes. In all, Chambers owed the county $4,500 in back taxes, records showed.
Days after the report was published, Chambers paid $75 worth of his debt and began a payment plan with the county.
A member of the Board of Supervisors since 1991, Chambers helps decide how the county raises and spend millions of dollars for education, public safety and more.
In addition to Chambers’ unpaid local taxes, government agencies have filed tax liens against him, asserting that he had not paid tens of thousands of dollars in federal and state taxes.
Chambers is president and CEO of Joe Chambers Jr. Logging Co. and is minister at First Baptist Church in Covesville.
