Alcohol may have been a factor in the drowning death of a Scottsville man in a private Buckingham County pond, a game and inland fisheries spokeswoman said Sunday.

David Dimmie, 51, was fishing on the pond on Friday night in a Jon boat off White Rock Road, according to Julia Dixon, spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Dixon said Dimmie had family in Buckingham County.
Between 7 and 7:30 p.m., a person on the shore saw Dimmie fall out of the boat. Dixon said the person didn’t see Dimmie resurface, so that person went out to the road where there was cell phone coverage to call for help.

Authorities discovered Dimmie’s body around 10 p.m. Dixon said Dimmie was not wearing a lifejacket and was alone in the boat.
Information about the depth of the pond was not available.
