A 39-year-old man who sexually assaulted a University of Virginia student earlier this year will spend at least 40 years in prison in connection with the incident.

Prior to being sentenced this morning in Charlottesville Circuit Court, Christopher Allen Noakes said he would be willing to seek any treatment deemed necessary.

“I’m sorry for what I did,” Noakes said. “I take full responsibility.”

On Feb. 21, a second-year student was walking home on Grady Avenue and talking on the phone when Noakes walked up behind her and tried to rob her with a knife. Authorities said the victim handed over her purse, but Noakes dragged her into some bushes and sexually assaulted her. Neighbors and the man who had been on the phone with the victim before the incident called 911.

Noakes pleaded guilty May 27 to two counts of forcible sodomy as part of a plea agreement.

Circuit Judge Edward L. Hogshire sentenced Noakes today to a 40-year active prison sentence and a 90-year suspended sentence. He also will be required to register as a sex offender and be on good behavior for the rest of his life.
