Greene man charged
A Ruckersville man who was shot by a Greene County sheriff’s deputy Tuesday afternoon has been charged with three felonies.
Jonithan Tracy Mullins, 33, is charged with the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and attempted capital murder, said Sgt. David O. Cooper of the Virginia State Police.
Mullins is being held at the Central Virginia Regional Jail in Orange.
Authorities were called to a house in the 11000 block of Spotswood Trail around 5:45 p.m. Tuesday to respond to reports of a man shooting a gun from the front porch.
Upon their arrival, a man fired at the deputies and toward other homes nearby, authorities said. No one was injured from his gunfire.
The deputies warned him to drop his gun, but the man raised his weapon and pointed it toward a deputy, said Greene County Sheriff Scott Haas.
A deputy then shot Mullins in the arm. Mullins was treated for his non-life-threatening wound at the University of Virginia Medical Center. State police troopers arrested him after he was released Wednesday morning.
Haas declined to comment on the case Wednesday afternoon, saying he did not want to interfere with the state police investigation.
“We’re just letting the state police get everything together to do their job,” he said.
Haas declined to identify the deputy, who has been placed on administrative duty during the investigation.
In early January, Mullins was convicted of misdemeanor larceny. Three years ago, he was convicted of felony hit-and-run, according to court records.
Tuesday’s confrontation was the first shooting involving a deputy this year in Greene County. In January of last year, a Virginia game warden shot and killed a 16-year-old in Greene County after the teenager struck the game warden with his car. The warden was cleared of any wrongdoing.
In March, an Albemarle County police officer shot an armed Crozet man during an early morning police raid of the man’s home in connection with the Interstate 64 sniper shootings. That man, Edgar W. Dawson, is undergoing rehabilitation for his injuries.
