School to address online safety

Albemarle High School is hosting an assembly today about cyber-safety. The assembly is open to the public.

Representatives from Who’s Watching Charlottesville will provide information about the possible long-term implications of using popular sites such as Facebook and MySpace. Tips on how to stay safe from online predators will also be provided.

Who’s Watching Charlottesville is a campaign to encourage area residents to consider the question: “who is really watching us online?” according to school communications coordinator Maury Brown, who says there is a false sense of security and anonymity on the Internet.

The open assembly is scheduled for 2:30 to 3:45 p.m. today in the Albemarle High School Auditorium.

Educators who are part of the schools’ Internet Safety Teams are also meeting today, at Monticello High School, to discuss the county’s newly adopted Internet Safety Curriculum.
