Tinsley fund donates $75,000 to city schools
The Boyd C. Tinsley Fund at the Charlottes-ville Albemarle Commu-nity Foundation has awarded a $75,000 grant to the Charlottesville City Schools to support music, tennis and academic tutoring.
Tinsley, violinist with the Dave Matthews Band and a 1982 graduate of the Charlottesville High School Orchestra program, is providing the funds for the seventh year.
The grant pays for private music lessons for Walker Upper Elementary School, Buford Middle School and CHS Orchestra students who otherwise would be unable to afford them. The grant also covers musical supplies, camp tuition and instruments for graduating seniors at CHS who are entering music programs at the university level.
Also covered by the grant are salaries for tennis instructors, tennis camps and racquets for students who complete the program. The academic portion of the grant pays for one-on-one tutoring.
“Boyd’s gift to the CHSO has enabled every interested student to take private lessons, regardless of economic status,” CHS’ orchestra director, Laura Thomas, said in a statement. “We are able to provide tuition for workshops, extra music and quality accessories for orchestra members. We are deeply grateful to our most famous alumnus for his generous gift.”
