Fluvanna County public school students are getting an unexpected day off as a power outage has closed the county’s schools for the remainder of the day.

A spokeswoman for the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office said school officials canceled classes around 9 a.m. after an underground power transformer failed. The outage would take several hours to repair and affect different locations on the power grid across the county, the spokeswoman said.

School buses began returning students to their homes shortly after 9 a.m., officials said.
